Pulled out my Linksys and hooked it up and still same problems. Even tried Linksys -> D-Link -> WAN and nothing from Vista. XP is still running no matter how I lay out the network or whatever I do to the router(s). I did some netsh interface set work to my Vista.

When I connect the dls modem directly to the desktop pc or the laptop, i get a perfect internet connection. however when I have the router set up - ie. dsl modem connecting to wan port of router, and then port 1 of router going into desktop pc and trying to get laptop to recognize wireless signal, i get nothing.
